Fact: Swamps were first created for Shrek’s home. Okay, okay, not really.

Swamps have been around for a long time. In northwestern Ohio, there was once a massive 900,000-acre swamp called The Great Black Swamp (GBS). It formed 12,000 years ago when the Wisconsin Glacier receded, leaving behind thick black mud and forming the GBS.

The swamp was drained in the mid-1800s. The draining removed the filtering buffer that the swamp provided and ultimately lead to the water quality issues in Lake Erie today. H2Ohio wants to help recreate what the swamp did for Lake Erie through various wetland restoration projects. We think Shrek would approve!
