Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur has secured a $1.8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for the Erie County Health Department. The funding will allocate $375,000 annually over five years to address mental and behavioral health challenges in Northwest Ohio. This grant comes in addition to the $2 million that Rep. Kaptur previously directed towards the construction of a 4,000-square-foot Behavioral Health Transitional Support Housing facility in Erie County.

In a statement, Rep. Kaptur emphasized the importance of funding for mental health services, especially in light of the increased demand over the past few years. She stated, "This HHS funding will help to ensure that our medical providers have access to the support and funding they so desperately need to address behavioral health and mental health needs they face in our communities."

The grant has been recognized by Erie County Health Commissioner Pete Schade, who highlighted its potential to improve care coordination and community education. Schade said, "This grant will allow enhanced care coordination... a vital component of care for those vulnerable populations we serve." He also expressed gratitude to supporters of the initiative and recognized Rep. Kaptur as a leader and champion for the needs of the region.

The $1.8 million grant was awarded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), an agency under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. SAMHSA is dedicated to advancing behavioral health and enhancing the lives of individuals dealing with mental and substance use disorders. Their mission involves spearheading public health initiatives, prevention of substance misuse, and offering treatments and support to encourage recovery while ensuring equitable access and improved outcomes.
