State Rep. Steve Demetriou | The Ohio House of Representatives
State Representative Steve Demetriou has announced the inclusion of the "Innocence Act" as an amendment in the state operating budget, which the Ohio House of Representatives passed today. This legislation aims to safeguard children in Ohio from exposure to obscene materials online.
"As a father to young boys, I was proud to see the House include the Innocence Act in House Bill 96," said Representative Demetriou. "This commonsense language will help to protect our children from obscene material online, just like we do in-person, and ensure that the distribution of nonconsensual deepfake pornography doesn’t go unpunished."
The Innocence Act seeks to protect minors by mandating that publishers of obscene content verify the age of users. Additionally, the act establishes criminal penalties for deepfake pornography, where a person’s image is used without consent in explicit content. This measure allows legal action against those responsible for such activities.
House Bill 96, which includes this measure, now advances to the Ohio Senate for further deliberation.
