The Ohio House of Representatives has passed House Bill 70, a measure that mandates Ohio schools to develop policies concerning the administration of over-the-counter medications. The bill sponsors, State Reps. Jennifer Gross (R-West Chester) and Sarah Fowler Arthur (R-Ashtabula), made this announcement.

According to State Rep. Jennifer Gross, "Parents know their child’s medical history best." She emphasized that the bill aims to enhance collaboration between parents and schools to safeguard the health and safety of Ohio children.

State Rep. Sarah Fowler Arthur explained the necessity for the bill by stating, “Representative Gross and I brought this legislation forward when we learned that Ohio law is silent regarding over-the-counter medication administration within a school." She highlighted a past incident where a child fell ill due to the interaction between over-the-counter and prescription medication, underscoring the importance of having clear policies in place.

House Bill 70 is designed to protect students' health, facilitate effective communication between school nurses and parents regarding students' health history, and shield schools from potential liability issues. The bill will now advance to the Ohio Senate for further consideration.
